Week 1 March 31

Overview of Space Weather Course Logistics

The first day of class will begin with introductions and course logistics (syllabus, web page, "clicker" set up etc.) and the answer to next weeks Quiz.

On Wednesday and Friday, I will present Introductions to the Earth's space environment and the impacts of space weather as well as have a discussion on "What is Science?"

Week 2 April 7

The Dynamic Sun

Be prepared to answer and ask questions with regards to the previous week's reading assignment. Please participate in a discussion on the impact of the space environment on modern civilization. Introduction to the Sun. Discussion of the atmosphere of the Sun and its extension into interplanetary space.

Week 10 June 2

Astrobiology and Other Planet Space Weather Impacts

Discussion of the space environment of other planets in our solar system. Prospects of finding other planets around other Suns. Discussion of the Drake equation and the possibility of other life in our solar system. Major impacts on Earth from nearby supernova, asteroid impacts and climate change

Optional ASSIGNMENT: Go outside at night and see how many constellations you can find. Record the date, time, and location (Griffith Park, Manhatten Beach, Campus) and sky condition (clear, partly cloudy etc.). You can make a star map from anywhere at anytime at Heaven's Above. This link is set up for LA. For other locations you will need to enter in the new coordinates.
